WHAT IS LYCOPoDIUM

Lycopodium powder is a fine, yellow-tan powder made from the dry spores of the lycopodium clavatum (common clubmoss) plants.

The lycopodium plant is mostly found in tropical and subtropical regions. The powder is made by collecting the spores of clubmoss plants. The spores are very small and light, and they are easily released into the air when the plants are disturbed. To collect the spores, clubmoss plants are typically cut down and dried. The dried plants are then beaten or sifted to release the spores. The spores are then separated from the plant material by sifting or winnowing.

Depending on the sifting or seperation techniques, large or smaller particle sizes can be obtained. These are what we know to be as light and heavy powder.  The heavy powder consist of very fine spores tightly packed together leading to a more dense product compared to the light powder consisting of larger spores taking up more volume.

For our purposes we look for the largest spores so we can offer large volume (light) lycopodium at the most effect per kilogram.

How to use Lycopodium

Fire performers use lycopodium to create large flame effects. When sprinkled on a fire source or disperced into the air and ignited, the powder creates large flame effects. The powder needs to be disperced to ensure enough oxygen in between the spores to allow for a continious burn. When the powder is not disperced it is not flamable.

The most commonly used tool for the lycopodium effect is a one side hollow torch with a kevlar wick on top.

Process of usage:

  • Transfer lycopodium powder into your torch or other lyco tool. (Tip: use our fast flow funnel system for quick and easy lycopodium powder transfer).
  • Soak your wick in a fuel source like lamp oil but make sure the lycopodium stays dry (otherwise clumps will be formed and you risk blocking your lyco tool).
  • Light the wick and spin your lyco tool around allowing the lycopodium to be dispersed in the air and ignited by the fire.

Safety

Storage

Store the powder in a dry room with adequate ventilation and no extreme temperatures. Lycopodium is very sensitve to humidity so make sure you close the container well after each use. Keep the powder out of reach of children.

Preparation

Although Lycopodium is natural, non-toxic product. The extremely small particles can be hazardous when inhaled in large quatities. We recommend when transferring the powder and preparing your tools to wear a face mask. Lycopodium powder is not environmentally hazardous nor groundwatering endangering.

Handling

Lycopodium powder creates a lot of heat when burned. Make sure your clothing and surround decorations are heat-resistant. The powder is very air sensitve so watch out in windy conditions. When the wind turns, the flame will turn with it!

FAQ

Yes, make sure to store it at room temperature in a closed container. Lycopodium only burns when dispersed into the air (when it has enough oxygen and is ignited by a fire source) so when transferring and handling the powder try to make as little dusts as possible. Keep the powder dry.

It is recommended to ask someone with experience to be present or at least have a fire safety person spotting you. The lycopodium fire effect is extremely hot: synthetic or very light clothing can melt or catch fire. Please wear leather or natural fiber clothing (e.g. cotton) with a proper thickness. It is advised to cover as much skin as possible and make your hair wet.

The powder is very susceptible to wind, causing the flame to turn in any direction (always have the wind in your back). Because the powder is very light and burns hot, it will always rise up quickly after ignition so watch out with downwards motions. Start with a small amount of powder to get used to it and see how it reacts and go from there.

Since there can always be lycopodium powder left in your tool never point the opening downwards as lycopodium powder might come out and create a large flame. Hold the lycopodium tool horizontal and slowly let it rest on your fire extinguish blanket. Extinguish the fire on the tool by covering it with your fire extinguishing blanket and pressing firmly cutting of all the air supply. Once you are sure the tool is out remove the extinguishing blanket.

Lycopodium is a dried plant seed so it is a 100% natural powder. It is not electrically ignited and not considered a pyrotechnic. It is not harmfull when stored backstage in a closed container out of the sun and can not self ignite. Any leftovers you find on the stage can be swept up and discarted in a waste bin or in nature.

Yes. You should make sure there are no flamable substances or decorations around you and espeically above you. Flames can reach hights up to 4 meter depending on your tool. It is adviced to not have air circulation on as this might give unexpected wind circulations leading to unpredictable flame behaviour. Keep in mind that indoor the flames might feel hotter as there is less fresh air.
